Open access & recording publications in Pure (CCBS guidance)

Information on the process for recording publications on Pure to meet UoE and funder open access policies, and ensure eligibility for the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

In brief - what you need to do

Please refer to the following 4 points; there is one point to be considered at each step:

1. WRITING THE PAPER. Add the following rights retention statement (RRS) to the acknowledgments section when you are writing your paper:

“For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a CC-BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission”

2. SUBMITTING. Choose your journal and OA publication route – Gold or Green:

Gold Open Access

(freely available to all to download from publisher’s website; author pays a fee to publish)

Green Open Access

(full publication only available for immediate download by journal subscribers or for a fee)

Research articles funded by Wellcome, UKRI, CRUK or BHF, and corresponding author is using an ed.ac.uk email address:
  • Option A: University block grant will pay the fee. Contact the Scholarly Communications team on openaccess@ed.ac.uk.
Not funded by one of the above?
  • Option B: Try to choose a journal that is covered by a Read and Publish deal, which will enable you to publish research articles gold open access for no extra charge. Corresponding author must be using an ed.ac.uk email address. Please check the list each time, because it changes!
  • Or Option C: Pay the charge from your own grant (often expensive!)
As long as the RRS has been included, the accepted manuscript can be made available in Pure immediately on publication. This fulfils UoE and funder policies.

3. ACCEPTANCE. When the paper is accepted, notify Fiona on ccbs-openaccess@ed.ac.uk and attach the author's accepted manuscript (AAM).

This is for Pure to fulfil UoE OA policy, and for REF. Once it is in the CCBS pipeline, there is nothing further you need to do.

4. PUBLICATION. If you are publishing green open access and your funder requires it, submit to EuropePMC. (Note, if you are publishing Gold open access, the publisher will do this step).
