Neurodegenerative conditions

Clinical and laboratory research to study mechanisms of neurodegeneration and repair in multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, Parkinson's, dementias and degenerative eye conditions.

Our research is a fusion of collaborative laboratory and clinical activity. In the lab, the researchers study disease mechanisms using human stem cell, cellular and in vivo models. Clinical research aims to understand disease incidence and course, undertake early-phase clinical trials and improve quality of life for patients.

The ultimate aim is to develop novel regenerative therapies for neurodegenerative disease.

UK Dementia Research Institute at the University of Edinburgh

The UK DRI at Edinburgh focuses on understanding how all the different cell types in our brains work together to keep the brain healthy, how this goes wrong in dementia, and how this process can be slowed or stopped to alter disease progression.

Professor Siddharthan Chandran, Professor David Hunt, Dr Axel Montagne, Professor Josef Priller and Professor Joanna Wardlaw are group at the UK DRI Edinburgh. Dr Bhuvaneish T Selvaraj is an emerging leader.

The members of the UK DRI at Edinburgh span the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences and Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences. The Director is Professor Giles Hardingham (Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences).
