Sep 2018: A group of Edinburgh Neuroscience and SPRINT-MND/MS PhD students travelled to Glasgow to learn what it's like to live with multiple sclerosis. Jill Williamson summarises the day: PhD students from both Glasgow and Edinburgh were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to meet with Duncan and Yvonne Booth, the couple behind the "10 in 10 Challenge" MS fundraiser. Duncan, previously a top class rock climber, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2010, and since his diagnosis he and Yvonne have dedicated much time and energy to raising money for MS research. Since 2011, every year Yvonne has organised the 10 in 10 Challenge events (where participants hike 10 fells in the Lake District in 10 hours), while Duncan tackles a different challenge alongside (such as swimming 10 lakes or scullying for 10 hours). Duncan spoke about his very active life prior to diagnosis, how their day-to-day life has changed over the past 8 years, and how his progressive disability has affected his pursuit of the outdoors. This fostered some very interesting discussions, and overall the event was of great benefit to all students who attended. Perhaps most inspiring was Duncan's constant and fearless adaptability to his disease - no matter what it throws at him, he finds new ways to pursue an active life.
