Feb 2019: We were proud to recognise the excellence of five of our PhD students at our Centre Away Day last week. The Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences held its 4th Annual Away Day last week in the magnificent surroundings of the Playfair Library Hall at Old College. Image The event was attended by approximately 180 members of the Centre - academic staff, students, professional services staff and visitors and was an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues and hear about the breadth of research that we do. Three-minute thesis During the morning before the main Away Day, we held an informal "three minute thesis"-style competition. Twelve PhD students presented their work and research plans in just three minutes, using a single slide - this is surprisingly tricky to do! The presentations were judged—by Postgraduate Coordinators Prof Adam Waldman and Dr Heather Whalley, plus Centre Director Siddharthan Chandran—on their content, delivery, slide, accessibility and time-keeping. The winners were as follows: Nathanael O'Neill (winner), Kaitlyn Hair and Beth York (runners-up). Congratulations all on your fantastic performance! John D Matthews Postgraduate Award This award is made annually to a postgraduate student in the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences who has shown academic excellence in Neurology. Students are nominated for the award by their supervisor. This year the prize was split between two equally excellent students, Dr Gashirai Mbizvo and Dr Gordon Blair. Gash and Gordon will each receiving funding towards attending a conference or training opportunity.
