The EDP Lecture series contains four original infomrative lectures originally delivered in 2020 on neurodegenerative disease, brain health, and disease prevention. The lectures are suitable for the public, students and professionals. Edinburgh Dementia Prevention collaborated with The University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Open Learning to host a series of open public lectures with the aim of improving understanding of the neurodegenerative diseases that cause dementia. This four-part series provides a comprehensive introduction to the biology of neurodegenerative disease, how research studies investigate these diseases, the ways we can use the power of data to predict dementia risk and the methods we can adopt, on a global scale, to empower individuals to improve their brain health and prevent the onset of dementia. You can test your knowledge with the online Dementia Prevention Micro-Module. Lecture 1 - What is Neurodegenerative Disease? Prof Craig Ritchie of Edinburgh Dementia Prevention gives an introductory lecture during the 2020 Lecture Series on neurodegenerative disease. The lecture provides an overview of the biology of the disease, the scientific study into the disease, and approaches to the treatment and prevention of the disease. Lecture 2 - How to Detect Neurodegenerative Disease This lecture focuses on how to detect the very earliest signs of change in the brain, how novel research studies will allow us to build an accurate picture of dementia risk and how we can apply the latest scientific findings to the clinic helping patients today and in the future. Lecture 3 - Developing treatments for Neurodegenerative Disease This lecture focuses on the new ways we can look to treat brain disease before dementia. From drug trials to lifestyle interventions, fundamental laboratory science to studying large at-risk human populations, and how we can apply the knowledge gained through research to develop the best strategies to prevent dementia. Lecture 4 - Dementia Prevention: A Global Perspective Prof Graciela Muniz-Terrera of Edinburgh Dementia Prevention discusses how big data and data modelling can provide a new approach to informing healtcare policy and inform strategies toward tackling neurodegenerative disease around the world.
